Discover Val di Noto, Sicily
Explore the History and Culture
Noto truly captures the eternity of time.
A UNESCO-protected, eighteenth-century Baroque masterpiece, Noto was home to the ancient Greeks, Romans, Normans, Arabs, Jews and Christians.
After its destruction by an earthquake in 1693, Noto was rebuilt from the ground up turning the town into the capital of Sicilian Baroque.
In the heart of Noto you can find some Baroque jewels such as Noto’s cathedral and Palazzo Ducezio, Palazzo Castelluccio and Palazzo Nicolaci. For a taste of Sicily’s famous pastries and granitas, we recommend Caffe Sicilia voted best Bar in Italy and can be found on Corso Vittorio Emanuele 125 (nearby the monuments).
Noto is also surrounded by beautiful historical and baroque towns such as Modica, famous for its chocolate, Siracusa, known for its Romans and Greek ruins including a large amphitheater and the island of Ortigia; Ragusa and Ragusa Ibla, where you can find the Duomo di San Giorgio and dine at Duomo Ristorante (Ciccio Sultano) for a unique culinary experience (we recommend booking well in advance if you are planning to be in Sicily for longer).
We also recommend visiting some of the local vineyards such as Tenuta Planeta or Feudo Maccari for local wine tasting !
Enjoy the Beaches
A short drive outside of Noto are some of the most secluded sandy beaches not just in Sicily but in all of Italy.
The ones closest to town, Eloro-Pizzuta and Eloro, run right into the ruins of the seventh-century B.C. Greek city Eloro.
A little farther south are San Lorenzo Beach and Calamosche in the Vendicari Nature Reserve, a protected haven with flamingos, herons, and storks.
One great option is to rent lounge chairs and umbrellas at the Agua Beach Resort, in San Lorenzo Noto.
